Frequently Asked Questions
An ASP is an individual or business accredited by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment, Resources and Energy, to work on the electricity distribution network in NSW. Only individuals and businesses that meet stringent criteria and are highly trained and qualified will be accredited. There are three levels of accreditation (Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3) which can be held individually, or in any combination. In addition to ASP accreditation, individuals and businesses must apply for, and be granted authorisation by each electricity utility (Essential Energy, Ausgrid and Endeavour Energy) to work on their individual networks.
An ASP Level 3 designs both overhead and underground electricity network assets. Level 3 is actually the first step of a project and involves designing and drawing the proposed works to meet a utility’s requirements and then working with the utility to have the design approved by them. Works can not start until the utility ‘certifies’ the design.
An ASP Level 1 constructs and installs electricity distribution infrastructure. This includes laying and stringing electricity cables, erecting electricity poles, excavating underground cable trenches, high and low voltage line work and installing transformers all similar to the owner of the network.
An ASP Level 2 connects power between the electricity network and a person’s premises. This can be by overhead wires or underground cables.
